Understanding the evolution of complex communication systems requires investigating both signal production and signal perception. In insects, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are central to chemical communication, yet the genomic mechanisms underlying the ability to perceive particular CHC compound blends remain largely unknown. Odorant receptor (OR) gene expression levels change when their corresponding encoded receptor proteins bind to specific odorants. The aim of this project is to determine the epigenetic mechanisms in regulating OR gene expression, and whether this regulation is consistent across our hymenopteran study species. This multi-omics approach will yield key insights into the genomic basis of the evolution of complex chemical communication systems, revealing how sender and receiver traits have evolved in concert.

The project is in close collaboration with the research groups of PD Dr. Florian Menzel (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz), PD Dr. Jan Büllesbach (Technical University of Munich), and Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmitt (University of Würzburg) and involves close cooperation with a second PhD student in the project who will lead the chemical ecology and comparative genomics analyses located in the groups of Prof. Dr. Oliver Niehuis and PD Dr. Volker Nehring (University of Freiburg).

We are recruiting a highly motivated PhD candidate with interest in molecular evolution, genomics, epigenetics, and chemical ecology to identify epigenetic mechanisms regulating odorant receptor expression, one of the key traits in chemical communication systems.

Your tasks

• Conduct experimental work and collect samples from three Hymenoptera species from three different odour blend treatments.
• Perform essential laboratory work (e.g. RNA extraction, library preparation)
• Carry out bioinformatic analyses to analyse multi-omics data gene-expression data with epigenetic regulatory states.
• Publish results in internationally peer-reviewed journals, and present those at international conferences
• Closely collaborate with the comparative genomics counterpart

Your profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics or a related field
• Strong interest in molecular evolution, genomics, epigenetics, and chemical ecology
• Prior experience with NGS data, R, another programming language is a plus
• Experience with formulating scientific questions, planning and executing a research project
• Very good English communication skills, curiosity, independence, and interest to collaboratively work in an interdisciplinary team

Desireable skills

• Experience in conducting experiments
• Experience in dissection of specific tissues
• Experience in molecular laboratory procedures, including RNA extraction, preparation of Enzyme-seq and CUT&Tag libraries
• Experience in the bioinformatic analyses of transcriptome, methylation and/or histone modification data

Subsociality (parental care) is considered a prerequisite for the evolution of eusociality. While the genomics of eusociality are well studied, the transition from solitary to subsocial lifestyles has received little attention. Subsociality evolved independently in 10 beetle families, with a single transition to eusociality (the ambrosia beetle, Austroplatypus incompertus). The aim of this project is to uncover the detailed regulatory architecture that emerged with the evolution of subsociality and controls complex interactions between parents and offspring.

The project will be in close collaboration with the Sandra Steiger research group (University of Bayreuth), Peter Biedermann (University of Freiburg), and a joint modelling project located at the Dirk Metzler group (LMU Munich) and Mark Harrison (Coventry University). The project is also part of an interdisciplinary consortium studying the “GEvol: Genomic Basis of Evolutionary Innovations (GEvol)” (Priority Programme, SPP 2349 funded by German Science Foundation (DFG)).

We are recruiting a highly motivated PhD candidate with interest in molecular evolution, genomics, epigenetics, and behavior to identify key regulators and epigenetic modifications shaping the evolution of social behavior using a multi-omics approach.

Your tasks

• Conduct experimental work and collect samples from eight beetle species across three parental-care phases from carrion and ambrosia beetles.
• Perform essential laboratory work (e.g. RNA extraction, library preparation)
• Carry out bioinformatic analyses to analyse multi-omics data gene-expression data with epigenetic regulatory states.
• Publish results in internationally peer-reviewed journals, and present those at international conferences
• Closely collaborate with the modelling counterpart

Your profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics or related field
• Strong interest in evolutionary processes, genomics, and behavior
• Prior experience with NGS data, R, another programming language is a plus
• Experience with formulating scientific questions, planning and executing a research project
• Very good English communication skills, curiosity, independence, and interest to collaboratively work in an interdisciplinary team

Ihre Aufgaben

• Betrieb, Überwachung und praktische Betreuung der gebäudetechnischen Anlagen am Standort
• Regelmäßige Kontrolle, Bedienung und einfache Instandhaltung technischer Anlagen einschließlich GLT, RLT, Brandmeldeanlagen und EMA
• Erkennen, Dokumentieren und Beheben von Störungen sowie Durchführung kleinerer, gewerkübergreifender Reparatur- und Instandsetzungsarbeiten

Ihre Aufgaben

•    Weiterentwicklung und Koordination des PhenObs@herbaria Netzwerks sowie aktive Mitgestaltung des standardisierten Beobachtungs  und Messprotokolls
•    Erhebung, Analyse und Veröffentlichung phänologischer Daten und Merkmalssätze zu Herbariumsexemplaren; enge Verzahnung mit dem PhenObs Netzwerk Bot
•    Veröffentlichung von Ergebnissen in hochrangigen Fachzeitschriften
•    Präsentation des Netzwerks auf nationalen und internationalen Fachkonferenzen
•    Betreuung von Hilfskräften und Studierenden im Projekt, inklusive Anleitung, Qualitätskontrolle und Motivation

Ihr Profil

• Abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium (Master, Promotion von Vorteil) im Bereich Pflanzenökologie oder einem verwandten Fach
• Umfangreiche Erfahrung in der phänologischen Beobachtung von Pflanzen und der Messung von Merkmalen
• Fundierte Praxis in moderner statistischen Auswertung, z.B. R, Python
• Sehr gute Deutsch- und Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift

The Geobiodiverstiy Information and Data Management team contributes to the development of national and international research data infrastructures, making Senckenberg’s natural history collections and geobiodiversity research data sustainably accessible for interdisciplinary usage. Our team is dedicated to managing, storing, archiving, and publishing diverse types of geobiodiversity data and metadata.

GFBio (Gesellschaft für Biologische Daten e.V.) constitutes a platform for managing, sharing, and preserving biological research data and expertise throughout Germany. Currently, 10 Data Centers serve as infrastructure partners within the GFBio network, supporting the curation, archiving, and publication of biodiversity data. Senckenberg hosts a GFBio Data Center, and data submitted through GFBio are transferred to the infrastructure improved and established by the appointed candidate. The aim is to enhance our infrastructure for the curation and archiving of various biological data, starting with information on physical collection objects, continuously extended by further data types. This development project is funded by NFDI4Biodiversity, part of NFDI, the German National Research Data Infrastructure Program.

The project position is part of our Senckenberg Data and Modelling Center (SDMC) with experts in the areas of biodiversity research data management and service development at the Senckenberg Institutes, so that comprehensive training in the relevant subject areas is guaranteed.

Your tasks

• Enhancing SGN Data Center infrastructure for the curation and archiving of various biological data, starting with information on physical collection objects, continuously extended by further data types
• Lead the conception and implementation of database extensions and APIs for data transfer, with a high level of responsibility.
• Ensuring data security, including rights management
• Independently design a workflow for versioning of datasets, usage of suitable archiving formats and backup strategies, following the OAIS Reference Model
• Support the Core Trust Seal Certification process
• Responsibility for the development of individual solutions for specific data submitted through GFBio as well as sustainable general workflows
• Proficient communication with colleagues (Central IT, SDMC) for integration with internal workflows and systems
• Communication with GFBio Data Center group (exchange and status reports)

Your profile

• Completed university/technical college degree in computer science, bioinformatics, geoinformatics, or comparable qualification
• Experience with building, maintaining, and connecting databases, data exchange formats and structures (PostgreSQL, XML, JSON)
• Knowledge of APIs and corresponding specifications (OpenAPI)
• Knowledge of data archiving formats and standards, and backup procedures, preferably strong experience in this field
• Very good communication skills and the ability to conceive and implement software solutions independently, but in close discussion with cooperation partners
• Good communication skills in both written and spoken German and English
• Team-oriented, structured, and flexible working style, ideally with the willingness to travel for training, meetings and presentations

Desirable skills

• Experience with biological data, taxonomic knowledge (ABCD, DarwinCore)

Our headquarter is located in the thriving commercial metropolis of Frankfurt in the heart of Germany, which also hosts one of our most famous facilities, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum.

The renowned Senckenberg Museum of Natural History (SMNG) in Görlitz hosts one of the largest collections of soil fauna in Europe and, within its Soil Zoology department, conducts basic and applied research in soil fauna taxonomy and ecology. The Soil Zoology department consists of seven sections, with the Oligochaeta section being one of the latest additions. Community dynamics and taxonomic and functional diversity of potworms (Enchytraeidae) and earthworms is the main research topic of this section. Its research focusses on ecology, with a special emphasis on soil fauna mediated ecosystem services.

The project

Land use affects belowground communities with unknown consequences for essential ecosystem processes. In the framework of the Biodiversity Exploratories (https://www.biodiversity-exploratories.de/en/), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the project “Biodiversity exploratories – Biodiversity of Enchytraeidae and their Functions (BE-DEF)” will investigate temporal and spatial dynamics of grassland communities of Enchytraeidae (Annelida, Oligochaeta) using morphological identification, metabarcoding, and eDNA approaches. Combined with proteomics and compound-specific stable isotopes, we will analyse the impact of land use on functional diversity in Enchytraeidae communities and therefore soil functions. In this project, two researchers will closely work together for sampling campaigns, morphological species identification and interpretation of results. One of them (based in Görlitz) will specialize in analysing functional traits using proteomics (MALDI-TOF) and compound stable isotope analysis in amino acids of Enchytraeidae. The other researcher (based in Frankfurt) will engage in molecular methods like metabarcoding and eDNA.

Your tasks

• Participate in field work campaigns (each covering one week, three in total) within Germany

• Short-term lab visits (each covering a maximum of four weeks, three in total) to Frankfurt, Göttingen, Wilhelmshaven

• Determination of Enchytraeidae and collection of morphological trait data

• Management of morphological trait database

• Preparation of samples for stable isotope and proteome measurements, analysis and interpretation of results

• Analysis of physical and chemical soil parameters

• Exchange of data and results within the project team, coupled with online meetings for joint interpretation of results

• Participation at national and international conferences for presenting results of the research project

• Writing of manuscripts for publication of research results in international journals

In the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK-F) in Frankfurt am Main, the department Functional Environmental Genomics develops and adapts molecular approaches to study the structure, composition and functions of hard-to-observe organisms, particularly soil invertebrate communities. We generate high-resolution genomic resources and tools, including shotgun metagenomics, ancient environmental DNA time series, and transcriptomic analyses, to improve species identification and to address key ecological questions such as the impacts of rapid global change on biodiversity. Through interdisciplinary collaborations, we integrate complementary genomic approaches and contribute to foundational databases and ecological insights that support biodiversity monitoring and conservation.
