Our exhibition and research collections comprise more than 7 million objects. Each object tells its own story. The collections serve as unique archives of nature and form the basis for numerous research projects on Earth’s history and biodiversity.

The history of the collections is closely intertwined with the history of Saxony and its citizens. The collections trace their origins to the art and natural history cabinet of the Saxon Elector August (1526–1586). The exchange between the scientific community and society often served as a driving force for new discoveries and insights, just as much as global scientific collaboration did. Many of the objects found their way into our collections through private individuals, volunteers, and our scientists. We are now retrieving some of these objects from our storage facilities. At the SENCKENBERG Natural History Collections Dresden, research into the “Earth System” has been conducted for nearly 300 years. Today, we are part of the SENCKENBERG Society for Natural Research and thus the largest institution within the Leibniz Association, comprising eight research institutes and three museums.
