Diversity matters! An Expedition into Biodiversity

31. 10. 2019 — 17. 5. 2020

Due to measures taken to combat the coronavirus pandemic, the exhibition had to close as early as the end of March 2020.

Biodiversity is a vital foundation of our lives. It encompasses not only the diversity of animal and plant species, microorganisms, and fungi, as well as genetic diversity within species, but also the complex ecological processes and interactions across a wide variety of habitats on Earth. Understanding and preserving it is the goal of biodiversity research, one of the most important fields of research for the future.

Researchers have many questions about a habitat:

How many species live there, and which ones?
Is a species-rich ecosystem more stable than one with few species?
What happens when species disappear?
What impact do climate change and humanity’s growing demand for resources have?

These questions are not only of interest to the scientific community; they affect us all.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) supports biodiversity research through many projects. With its exhibition “DIVERSITY MATTERS!”, it brings this research to life and makes it understandable, showing what biodiversity means and why it is so important to us humans and worth protecting.

Biological Diversity – Fascination and the Basis of Life

Biological diversity is an essential part of our habitat, provides us with vital resources, and forms the foundation of our culture and civilization. Yet biodiversity is under threat: Human-driven changes to the Earth are leading to species loss, the extent and consequences of which are poorly understood.
The exhibition brings to life what biodiversity means and how it is studied. Numerous interactive exhibits and media installations invite visitors to observe, participate, and experience firsthand.
